The Alfred Display App is exactly that — a display app. All personalized data displayed is proactively shared with Alfred and automatically authorized to be displayed.
Alfred displays information only — we do not collect, retain, collate, sort, manage, store, centralize, backup, protect, document, hoard, bottle up, stash, squirrel away, keep under wraps, tell our Aunt Tessas what do with it or freeze it, see it, hear it, speak of it to others. We don’t tuck it away, sell it to other people, spam it, scrape it, steal, it, and we certainly don’t ask it to help us launch a text-scamming scheme, because we aren’t interested in running a text-scamming scheme.
We do allow a third-party to anonymously track standard web analytics, so there’s that.
Personal Information
Alfred allows for the personalization of its display, if provided with personalized data. This information is provided in the settings page, and includes things like your location, calendars, your sign, what you like to do on a good weekend, and whether or not you believe Darth Vader really did say “Luke, I am your father.” Well, it contains some of those things.
Personal information is stored locally and not uploaded to any servers. You will have to add personal information individually on every device. That’s because personal information is stored locally and not uploaded to any servers, like we literally just said. Were you listening?
We like to store things locally so that you can allow each device to act uniquely, because, like maybe you don’t want to share your work calendar in the living room. Maybe Richard from Shady Blinds and Us has no effing business knowing that you have an meeting with Lou from Bright View Window Coverings and he can go shove himself if he’s offended by that. His quote was waaaay overpriced and he knows it.
Alfred AI
Alfred AI (“Alfred AI”) is the artificial intelligence enabled portion of Alfred’s Smart Display. We use third-party AI providers for this. The use of Alfred AI requires clicking on an Alfred AI icon, loading an Alfred AI prompt in the daily schedule, or clicking on an Alfred AI branded link. The use of Alfred AI is entirely optional and if you don’t interact with Alfred AI, Alfred AI won’t interact with you. It’s a little like those 1,370,000 dust mites you’ve got living in your carpets.
Alfred AI uses LLMs to summarize the data provided to it, including your personal data, if provided. This data includes (but is not limited to) location, weather, and calendar data. No information is saved or stored by Alfred AI. We have no idea what the LLM saves, do you? The LLM’s handing of data is governed by their policies. We don’t control their retention practices.
Data + Security Disclaimer
Reasonable measures are taken to make sure data is handled securely, when we’re provided it. We’ve got automatic times for our lights, locks for our doors, and that’s about as well as anybody can do these days. (Actually, there’s more, and we do that too… we live in the world of HTTPS just like you.) You are responsible for device security.
Marketing
If you have provided your email address or subscribed to Alfred, you may be opted into receiving email or other marketing communications. You can always opt out of these if you hate our emails, but we really hope you don’t, it would hurt our feelings. Actually, we really don’t care, we don’t have those types of feelings for you. I know, awkward, but it’s true. Opt out as much as you’d like.
You may be targeted with advertisements if you use this app or visit one of our websites. We can’t opt you out of those — we are just an advertiser. Those publishers already had you opt-in and opt-outs are handled through them, presumably by declaring your allegiance to the Thuggee and getting your heart ripped out in an elaborate midnight ceremony. Or through a simpler process, but again, we don’t know. Those agreements were done with the individual ad publishers so check with them.
